Naan

Ingredients

  • 6 ¼ cups white bread flour
  • 1 tablespoon baking powder
  • 1 teaspoon sugar
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 ½ cups lukewarm water
  • 1 egg
  • ¼ cup melted ghee or vegetable oil + extra for oiling and brushing

Directions

  1. Sift the flour (6 ¼ cups), baking powder (1 tablespoon), sugar (1 teaspoon), and sugar (1 teaspoon) into a bowl
  2. Make a well in the center of the dry ingredients
  3. Mix together the water (1 ½ cups) and egg, beating until the egg breaks up and is blended with the liquid
  4. Slowly add the liquid mixture to the well in the dry ingredients making sure to draw in the flower from the sides until you have a stiff, heavy dough
  5. Shape the dough into a ball, cover, and let rest for 30 minutes
  6. Invert the dough onto a surface brushed with melted ghee and flatten with a rolling pin
  7. Gradually sprinkle the dough with melted ghee and kneed to work it in little by little
  8. Shape the dough into ten equal balls, cover, and let rise for 1 hour
  9. Preheat oven to 450°F
  10. Using a lightly greased rolling pin, roll the dough balls into teardrop shapes about ⅛ inch think
  11. Brush two baking sheets with ghee and arrange naan on the prepared sheets
  12. Bake in the preheated oven for 5-6 minutes or until naan is golden brown and lightly puffed
